Long Island autism program draws parents from across state
A New York school's award-winning program for educating students with autism has led parents to flock to the district, doubling its autistic population in four years. The 10,000-student district now educates more students with autism than any other on Long Island. Newsday (Long Island, N.Y.) (12/09/2007)

Gradual Entry ~Kai's Day Care Transition
This is the day 3 of his introduction to the Day Care (18mos-3yrs) Program.
0900-1200 hrs
He showed little concerns of being on his own without parents in the program. Still loving to playing with bulldozers, cars, and the sandbox, which are all available (more or less the same toys) at home.
Staff informed me that Kai joined some of the group time activities for readings and songs.

Study: Autism social-skills training ineffective
Programs to teach social skills to children with autism are largely ineffective and result in little change outside the classroom, according to an Indiana University meta-analysis of 55 published research studies, which appears in this month's Journal of Remedial and Special Education. Although outcomes for such training were poor overall, programs in normal classroom settings were more likely to result in positive changes than those in pull-out settings. ScienceDaily (06/26/2007)

Kai's Developmental Progress

Kai peeled the mandarin orange on his own (without any preps) and snacked on it!!
Other landmarks include:
* Moving dining chairs around the kitchen to explore previously- unreachable places such as counter top and kitchen sinks.
* Playing his favourite CD (LittlePeople Sing-along) on stereo
* Insists on putting the fireplace on on not-so-cold days
... also, Kai likes to carry his stuffed-Baby Ghost (Halloween is near) to spook you by holding it out in your face saying "Boo!"

Memories Of My Melancholy Whores by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
... I discovered that my obsession for having each thing in the right place, each subject at the right time, each word in the right style, was not the well-deserved reward of an ordered mind but just the opposite: a complete system of pretense invented by me to hide the disorder of my nature. I discovered that I am not disciplined out of virtue but as a reaction to my negligence, that I appear generous in order to conceal my meanness, that I pass myself off as prudent because I am evil-minded, that I am conciliatory in order not to succumb to my repressed rage, that I am punctual only to hide how little I care about other people's time. I learned, in short, that love is not a condition of the spirit but a sign of the zodiac.
Memoria de mis putas tristes (c) 2004
